Necessity of Getting Permanent Crown Put on Dental Implant Instead of Keeping Temporary One

A dental implant is one of the most modern ways to replace a tooth that is missing. However, what a lot of people do not understand is that these implants only replace the tooth’s structure. An artificial tooth must be placed on top of the actual implant to replace the tooth portion. The implant itself just acts as a support system for the replacement tooth.

When dental implant placement initially takes place, an oral surgeon will place a temporary crown on top of the implant so that during the healing process, the patient can still function. Later on, a permanent crown will be placed. A permanent crown is important for the complete functionality of the dental implant. Read on to find out why.

The importance of having a permanent crown put on a dental implant

After dental implant surgery, most people are eager to get back to the normal chewing and natural smiling that they are accustomed to. With a temporary crown, that can be possible. However, a temporary crown does not ensure long-term functionality and aesthetics to the extent a permanent one does.

Functionality

Temporary crowns are meant to be a short-term solution for the chewing and grinding of food. Oral surgeons place them during implant surgery to ensure that the patient can still function normally during the implant fusing process. However, long-term temporary crowns do not offer the full functionality that permanent ones do.

Because temporary crowns are made of less durable materials, they are less likely to last more than a few months. It is important to have permanent crowns placed that can weather the natural wear and tear that comes from eating every day.

Aesthetics

Tooth replacement is not just about the functionality of course; it is also about the way the artificial tooth looks. Temporary dental crowns are not usually custom-created for each tooth, which may not make for as an attractive or convincing replacement tooth. Keeping temporary crowns on forever could produce an unnatural look that may defeat the entire purpose of tooth replacement.

Permanent dental implant crowns are made of ceramic materials and are custom-created in a dental lab with the equipment to personalize these fixtures. They can be matched to the patient’s natural tooth color to ensure that blending takes place, which again helps improve the overall aesthetic of one's smile.

Replace temporary crowns with permanent ones today

Keeping a temporary dental crown on an implant for extended periods of time could cause issues or damage because it is not made to be a long-term solution. After the surgery and once the implant is fused, it is important to follow up with the dentist to have the permanent dental crowns placed. It may be tempting to just skip the extra dentist's appointment and keep going with the temporary ones, but a patient who does so runs the risk of having to start the tooth replacement process over again.
