Learn About the Different Types of Dentures

Dentures Everett, MA

Nowadays, people have several options to restore their teeth, and one of them is dentures. With so many different types, a dentist can have a set made that looks, feels, and functions just like a person’s natural teeth. Patients can even choose the material that will be used. Keep reading to find out more about dentures.

Advances in dental care

In response to the high demand for dentures, the dental industry made a lot of positive changes. These are now so well-made that it is nearly impossible to tell when someone wears them. Dentures offer a comfortable fit and last for a long time. With different types available, a dentist can offer these to almost every patient.

Traditional dentures

As a full or complete set, these dentures replace a patient’s natural teeth. These sit directly on top of the gums. The dentist will first remove all of the patient’s teeth. Then, a dentist fits a patient with traditional dentures between eight and 12 weeks following the tooth extraction process.

Partial dentures

Someone with partial dentures still has some of their own teeth. Designed with a pink base that attaches to a metal piece that keeps them secure, these look natural. Partials, like traditional dentures, are removable. This makes them easy to soak and clean.

Immediate dentures

Some patients do not want to appear in public without teeth. In that case, dentists recommend immediate dentures after a tooth extraction procedure. With the immediate kind of dentures, a dentist fits them to the patient’s mouth on the same day as the teeth extraction process rather than waiting up to three months. Once the permanent dentures are ready, the dentist will replace the immediate dentures.

Snap-in dentures

These dentures are one of the most popular types. Patients do not have to secure these with adhesive. Instead, the appliance snaps securely into place using locator attachments embedded in the gum tissue. Snap-in dentures are usually for people without any natural teeth.

Custom dentures

These are the most expensive type. However, custom dentures have the most natural-looking appearance. In this case, a dentist customizes the dentures on a patient-by-patient basis. The dentures will be made according to the patient’s mouth and smile.

Additional types of dentures

Patients have more options to choose from when it comes to dentures. These could be chosen in terms of affordability or convenience. Another reason to choose these would be their use. These types include:

  • Upper dentures
  • Implant-supported dentures
  • Economy dentures
  • Overdentures
